Preparing to install
Today we have been preparing the materials that we will use to attach the new information boards to the tunnel walls in the Stockport Air raid shelters, as part of a major redevelopment project. Many things need to be considered when installing the new information panels such as; the curvature of the tunnel walls. These will more difficult to hang than if the walls were flat due to the amount of space present behind the information boards . The tunnel walls are made from sandstone so this technique has been specifically designed to work within the damp environment. I have been involved with the making of the mounting plates that will be glued to the back of the information panels to support them. They will then be attached to metal rods which will then be attached directly into the walls. We made these mounting plates from acrylic, drilling holes using a pillar drill and then used a countersink tool to inset the fittings to allow them to be fixed to the metal rods. These should hold the information boards firmly in place for many years (hopefully!).
